On 1 March, Iranian missiles and drones struck the Gulf, one of which landed on an Amazon data centre in the United Arab Emirates。

The room was set on fire, electricity was cut, and about 60 cloud services were interrupted。

One of the largest users in the world, Claude, runs above the Amazon cloud. On the same day, Claude's global crash。

The official version of Anthropic is that the server can't hold up because of the surge in users。

By the time it was delivered, there were still media outlets that did not have access to Claude’s services; and on the famous forecast market Polymark, the topic of “Claude has a few more times in March.”。

If it were finally confirmed that it was Iran, it would be the first time in human history:

A commercial data centre was physically destroyed during the war。

But why would a civilian room be bombed

Two days back. On 28 February, the United States and Israel joined forces in an air strike against Iran, killing Supreme Leader Khamenei and a group of senior officials。

Information analysis, target identification and battle-playing of the attack, a significant part of Claude's work. Through the cooperation of the military and the data analysis company Palantir, Claude has long been embedded in the American intelligence system。

Ironically, a few hours before the air strike, Trump had just ordered the complete closure of Anthropic because Anthropic refused to hand over AI to the Pentagon without restriction. But the battle is still fought。

To pull Claude out of the military system, the public statement is at least six months。

So before the ink was dry, the Americans took Claude to bomb Iran. Then Iran fought back, and the missile landed on the flight room of Claude AI。

The engine room was probably not targeted, it was affected. But whether the missile went to the engine room or not, one thing is certain:

So Amazon opened a room in the UAE and Bahrain, and another $5.3 billion went to Saudi Arabia; Microsoft has nodes in the UAE and Qatar, and Saudis have been built。

OpenAI, together with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is building over $30 billion of an AI campus in the United Arab Emirates called the largest computing base outside the United States。

In January this year, the United States of America signed an agreement with Qatar called "Pax Silica". It's called Silicon Peace. It sounds beautiful。

At the heart of the agreement was to control the flow of chips and ensure that advanced chips did not fall into the hands of China。

IN EXCHANGE, THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES IS LICENSED TO IMPORT HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF BRITISH WEIDAR'S STATE-OF-THE-ART PROCESSORS EACH YEAR. ABU DHABI'S G42 AND CHINA CUT, SAUDI AI PROMISED NOT TO BUY CHINESE EQUIPMENT...

THE WHOLE GULF'S AI INFRASTRUCTURE, FROM CHIP TO MACHINE ROOM TO MODEL, IS COMPLETELY DOWN TO AMERICA。

These agreements take into account all aspects, ranging from chip export controls, data sovereignty, investment reciprocity and technology leakage risks。

None of them, however, has ever considered the use of missiles to bomb aircraft。

An international security scholar from the University of Qatar said after the fire in the Amazon chamber, which was more appropriate:

“These safety frameworks are designed for supply chain control and political stations, and physical security has never been on the agenda”。

The story of a decade of cloud computing is elasticity, redundancy and decentrization. However, the machine room had an address building with walls and coordinates. Your chip goes up, your room is blown up。

The cloud is a metaphor, not the machine room。

Is it civilian or military

In peacetime, the data centre site is based on delays, electricity prices, policy preferences... the war has come, and it doesn't matter how far your hangar is from the nearest military base。

So the bombing started to divert attention。
